Step into the vibrant world of Didi La Baÿsse, a self-taught French-Australian artist whose work radiates colour, texture, femininity, and raw emotion. Her working studio-gallery offers a rare chance to experience original art where it’s created — in Kuranda, Tropical North Queensland.
Didi’s creative spirit is deeply shaped by her surroundings: the ancient World Heritage rainforest, the vibrant life of the Great Barrier Reef, and the colour and character of Australian native birds. Her signature works include sensual French nudes, always joined by cats — a whimsical, unmistakable motif. She also paints figurative pieces featuring roosters, symbolising both farm life and the French national emblem. Doves of peace appear throughout her art, reflecting a gentle thread of hope, harmony, and inner calm.
Every original painting and handmade objet d’art in the collection tells a story of passion, instinct, and connection to place. Visitors are warmly invited to meet the artist, explore the gallery, and discover a uniquely expressive fusion of French soul and Australian feel.
The space also showcases a special collaboration with Leah Kelly by Design, an international designer known for handmade organic haute couture in natural fibres. Long-time friends with a shared creative vision, Didi and Leah bring fine art and fashion together under one roof. Leah is often in the gallery, offering visitors the chance to meet one of the designers behind the work.
Whether you’re an art lover, a curious traveller, or a collector searching for something truly special, Didi’s Art Studio & Gallery is a must-see in Kuranda — offering a bold, beautiful, and deeply personal experience of Australian contemporary art.
