Teams are already getting together to practise for the hotly contested Bash of the Barron River Raft Race, and  there are plenty of kids willing to nominate for the Ice Cream Eating Competition featuring the delicious flavours of the Kuranda Home-made Tropical Fruit Ice Cream van.

The popular German Sausage Eating Competition will be on again with competitors scoffing as many as eight sausages in just 10 minutes and the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party is back this year where you can enjoy tea and cakes in the quirky atmosphere of the Kuranda Original Rainforest Markets.

There will be art & craft workshops for children to create their own “Mad Hat” for the tea party and four face painters will be transforming children’s faces into clowns and Mad Hatters with the best design being judging at the Heritage Markets.

Kuranda Festival is a great community event celebrating the colourful lifestyle we enjoy sharing with visitors to our village in the rainforest.

Tropical North Queensland’s bravest will be competing in the inaugural Croc Swim at the Kuranda Festival on October 18.

The upper reaches of the Barron River at Kuranda were the habitat for a number of freshwater crocodiles with the reptiles regularly seen by visitors on the Kuranda Riverboat Cruise.

Kuranda locals happily coexist with these crocodiles and swim in the Barron River so a challenge has been put out for a 100m swimming race in this beautiful stretch of the river. For more information contact Marc Sleeman on 0427 592 203

Cassowary Fun Run – 12 October 2014

It is estimated that as few as 1,000 Southern Cassowaries may still remain in the wild. This is pretty scary considering how important they are to the future sustainability of our World Heritage Rainforests. This magnificent bird is a tourism icon and has significant cultural importance to the traditional owners of the tropical rainforests.

Please join our inaugural 3.5km Cassowary Fun Run/Walk on Sunday 12 October as part of our annual Kuranda Festival. Participants are encouraged to dress up in Cassowary colours and help increase awareness about the plight of this endangered bird.

There is a $5.00 registration fee and all monies raised will be going toward signage on the Kuranda Range to educate people about the importance of not throwing food scraps out of a moving car and taking more care on the road. There have been far too many Cassowary sightings and deaths on the Kuranda Range and around our local roads this year and this needs to stop.

This is a great family activity and a wonderful opportunity to educate young children about the importance of protecting our wildlife and environment.

Kuranda Festival – Saturday 11th & Sunday 12th October

Kuranda gets festive for a big weekend

The plight of the endangered southern cassowary will be highlighted at the inaugural Cassowary Run as part of the annual Kuranda Festival on October 11-12.

Tourism Kuranda Executive Marc Sleeman said two big days of entertainment would be held to mark the 126th anniversary of the official survey of Kuranda.

“The Cassowary Run and an Ice Cream Eating Competition for the kids are the two new events for our weekend-long festival which celebrates the friendly, laid-back atmosphere of the Village in the Rainforest,” he said.

“After three successful years of the Undie Fun Run, we are challenging competitors to hide their undies this year and don the plumage of our rainforest icon, the cassowary.

“The $5 registration fee for the Cassowary Run will go towards interpretive signage at the Henry Ross Lookout to educate people about the importance of not feeding the birds or throwing food scraps out of a moving car.

“The Cassowary Run will be held on the bank of the Barron River on Sunday, October 12 at 11.30am, with registrations open from 10.30am.

“Kuranda Festival kicks off on Saturday, October 11with a free concert in Centenary Park from midday to 4.30pm featuring acoustic band Timber and Wood’s earthy mix of roots, reggae and folk music.

“They will be supported by Funky Love Tank, whose credits include touring with The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and Gudju Gudju Band, whose soulful blend of roots and reggae promotes cultural awareness.

“Sunday is jam-packed with activities starting with the Poet’s Breakfast. There will be food stalls and entertainment alongside the Barron River as well as free river cruises.

“Teams already are getting together to practise for the hotly contested Bash of the Barron River Raft Race, and I’m sure there are plenty of kids willing to nominate for the Ice Cream Eating Competition featuring the delicious flavours of the Kuranda Home-made Tropical Fruit Ice Cream van.

“Centenary Park will be just as busy with Koahlition performing and the German Sausage Eating Competition attracting wurst fans. Entertainment for the kids includes jumping castles, circus workshops, street performers, magic shows, horse and carriage rides and pony rides.”
