There are two very economical bus services which travel between Cairns and Kuranda. They offer local residents the means to travel to both work and school, but can also offer a cheap alternative for tourists and visitors travelling to and from the village. They are ideal for people who have enjoyed the experience of travelling to Kuranda on both the train and Skyrail and whom wish to return for another day.
Their operating times vary slightly from day to day and are best confirmed by contacting the Visitor Information Centre. Unfortunately, they operate on the basis of first in best dressed, so if you are able to purchase a return ticket on your upward journey, this will give you some guarantee that you’ll have a seat when you return. They are also able to drop people directly to the airport on request, when they travel from Kuranda to Cairns.
The first option is John’s Kuranda Bus. This is a cheap and cheerful bus shuttle that operates between Cairns and Kuranda Village several times daily. Times vary and please note there’s no service available on Christmas Day, Easter Friday or Labour Day. Payment is cash only. For more information call Call John on 0418 772 953.
Trans North Bus & Coach Service operates a Kuranda Shuttle Bus that completes five return services per day. This service operates every day of the year except Christmas Day and reduced times on public holidays. Payment is cash only and it costs $6.70 for Adults and $3.40 for Pensioners. Please note: This is a ‘Hail & Ride’ service. Bookings are not taken and ticket purchases are made from the driver as you board the bus.
Cairns to Kuranda trips depart Cairns Central Shopping Centre bus bay at Central Rail Station (platform 1) at 6.45am, 8.45am, 11.30am, 1.30pm, 3pm.
