The Kuranda Original Rainforest Markets began in 1978 on Honey House land by a group of local people trying to attract visitors to Kuranda. At that time, the village was very small with many “Hippie Artists” and craft people. The markets needed to operate their own train for two seasons to prove the viability of the service to the Railway Department. Now the markets have been an amazing success, providing employment for many, while the town is recognized as a unique Australian rainforest destination.
In 2006 the current owners began an ambitious undertaking to completely renovate the original market site. In keeping with the rustic atmosphere that the original markets were famous for, Malcolm and Georgina have created a miniature village in the rainforest, with interesting curious at every turn, tropical gardens and colourful characters to make your visit memorable.
Today the Original Markets has retained its atmosphere, with many local artists and personalities making the market part of their lifestyle. Many of the current marketeers have been involved in the markets during the last 25 – 30 years. Their local knowledge and expertise is second to none. Open 7 Days from 9.30am to 3.00pm.
You will find locally designed and produced fashions; hand crafted jewellery; indigenous artists; leather workers; masseurs; woodworkers and gemstone specialists, as well as North Queensland’s best range of honeys; local coffee; cafes and international dining outlets; tropical fruits; coconuts and macadamia nuts and even a mini golf course.
At the Kuranda Original Rainforest Markets you will find Emu Ridge Gallery which is the most photographed attraction in all of Kuranda and has the only Queensland life-sized Allosaurus! A perfected 9 meter replica of the Allosaurus entangled around the staircase shared and loved by many people who traveled all over the world just to and come see it!
Recently opened at the back of the markets is the new Botanic Garden Walk – allow ten minutes to stroll through and enjoy the sounds of the rainforest. There is even an area to have a picnic (no dogs allowed). The Kuranda Original Rainforest Markets are located in the market precinct of Kuranda, Therwine Street, adjacent to Centenary Park. Entrances through the Kuranda Market Mall, or next to the Honey House.
