Fashion in Kuranda

Spring is in the air, and that means it’s the perfect opportunity for a wardrobe update! It’s time to do some spring cleaning and invest in some new clothing pieces for the coming season. Out with the old, and in with the new!

Not only that, but the Cairns Amateur Racing Carnival is right around the corner. The Cairns Amateur Ladies Day is on September 9, and the Cup Day is September 10.

Kuranda has a variety of different fashion boutiques, from clothing to jewellery. These shops are located all throughout the village, and sell an eclectic range of new and second-hand clothes. You can find high end fashion as well as unique accessories for every outfit.

Whether you are looking for that special outfit for the races, or another big occasion, Just Gorgeous is one of the first places to look. Owner Jill Melody says that they now specialise in occasion outfits as well as everyday wear.

Jill also says that the lovely feminine vintage look is currently trending.

“We have a great selection of lace, as well as 50s style cotton dresses with hats, bags, shoes and even sunglasses to complete the outfit. Our aim is to make every woman feel and look like a winner!”

For those who are seeking a hat for the races, Just Gorgeous has a range of both hats and fascinators.

Just Gorgeous started out as a small recycled consignment store called New To You. This year marks 25 years in business. Jill says that tourists have often found their “mother of the bride or groom dresses where they least expected to find it – in our little village in the rainforest!”

If you are looking for a more bohemian style for the races, then Tonketti is the place to go. The boutique opened in June this year and has been getting a great response from locals and international tourists. The store also stocks beautiful leather bags, wallets, feather chokers, shell items and bohemian style homewares.

Tonketti offers a range of bohemian style clothing from casual crochet to beautiful maxi dresses. Owner Liz Tonkin says that “We appeal to those people who have a bohemian heart and love comfortable and affordable style”. She says that Tonketti has some lovely dresses, pantsuits and accessories that would be great for the upcoming races.

“Bohemian style is definitely on trend, judging by the response I’m getting from International visitors. The Wanderlust style is where it is at!” Liz says.

Tantrika is another popular boutique in Kuranda, selling clothes for men, women and children of all ages and sizes. They stock alternative fashions that are ecofriendly and are perfect for wearing in the tropics.

Candice from Tantrika says that “We are into looking great and feeling 100% comfortable”. The store stocks a huge range of Bamboo, Organic Cotton and Hemp, as well as a range of recycled rubber jewellery and thongs.

Tantrika has been running in Kuranda for nine and a half years, and they have recently opened a second store in Cairns. This is handy for those who run out of time whilst visiting Kuranda on a day tour and are heading back to Cairns. Tantrika also stocks their own self-designed kids label called Tantrika Tots.

Kuranda features a range of other fashion stores, including;

  • Sandra Viden Design which was established in 1991. It has built a reputation for effortless, trans-seasonal, easy fit style. All of the garments at Sandra Viden Design are designed and made in Australia.

Our Historical Rainforest Tour Celebrates a New Beginning

Kuranda Riverboat

Cruise the tranquil waters of the Australian tropical rainforest, and immerse yourself in the flora, fauna and history of the Barron River. Then, take a scenic walk through a secluded rainforest clearing and experience the wonders of the ancient rainforest.

Hop aboard the Kuranda Riverboat and cross the Barron River to the newly reopened Paradise Kuranda Guided Rainforest Walk for an unforgettable experience.

A Step Back in Time

Part of the popular rainforest trail dates back to the 1920s. Dan Duggan established the very first tour, with his attraction, “The Maze”. The tour was then later renamed as “Paradise”. A highway did not exist in the area at the time, so Mr Duggan would row tourists across the river, in all their finery and eager to experience the beauty of the Australian tropical rainforest.

According to Melissa Clinton of Kuranda Riverboat, this particular tour ceased in the 1950s.

The original owner of the Kuranda Riverboat business, Brian Clarke, started a rainforest walk across the river in the late 1980s, which continued for about 10 years.

Paradise Kuranda Guided Rainforest Walk

The Tours Today

The tours today consist of either a scenic 45 minute calm water cruise along the Barron River in Kuranda or a one hour guided rainforest walk followed by tea, coffee and cake.

The newly reopened Paradise Kuranda Guided Rainforest Walk does not actually take place on the original “Paradise” property. However, the current trail was historically used as the beginning of the walk toward “Paradise”.

The trail where the tour takes place has been tidied and improved for its reopening. This includes the rebuilding of the little bridge in the forest and the replacing of handrails.

In order to participate in the guided rainforest walk you will board the Kuranda Riverboat and be taken across the river to a secluded clearing.  Your guide will accompany you on an established forest trail where you will be shown many examples of tropical rainforest trees, vines, lianas and ferns. You may even spot a cassowary amongst the bushes.

At the end of the guided rainforest walk, there is a natural spring within the maintained clearing, where you will be served light refreshments before boarding the Kuranda Riverboat again to return to the village.

Whilst enjoying a cruise on the Kuranda Riverboat you will see a host of wildlife such as freshwater crocodiles, snakes, fish, turtles, water dragons and tropical birds.  Your local tour guide will share his knowledge of the unique area while you take in the beauty of the rainforest and take advantage of the great photographic opportunities on the river.

Paradise Kuranda Rainforest Tour

Tour Details

The Kuranda Riverboat Tour and Paradise Kuranda Guided Rainforest Walk operate five cruises and five rainforests walks per day, seven days of the week. They can accommodate group bookings and special tours outside of their normal tour times.

The Kuranda Riverboat can also be hired for small wedding ceremonies. Alternatively, sail across to the other side of the river and hold your wedding ceremony in a private and secluded area of the unique tropical rainforest. The company can organise witnesses for an elopement, as well as accommodation.

Get together with a group of friends and celebrate a special occasion aboard The Kuranda Riverboat for a cruise on the Barron River. BYO food and drinks, and celebrate with a minimum of 10 adults for the cruise.

Book your guided tour online. Cash only is accepted on the boat to save time and ensure the tour departs on schedule.

Cassowary Fun Run – 12 October 2014

It is estimated that as few as 1,000 Southern Cassowaries may still remain in the wild. This is pretty scary considering how important they are to the future sustainability of our World Heritage Rainforests. This magnificent bird is a tourism icon and has significant cultural importance to the traditional owners of the tropical rainforests.

Please join our inaugural 3.5km Cassowary Fun Run/Walk on Sunday 12 October as part of our annual Kuranda Festival. Participants are encouraged to dress up in Cassowary colours and help increase awareness about the plight of this endangered bird.

There is a $5.00 registration fee and all monies raised will be going toward signage on the Kuranda Range to educate people about the importance of not throwing food scraps out of a moving car and taking more care on the road. There have been far too many Cassowary sightings and deaths on the Kuranda Range and around our local roads this year and this needs to stop.

This is a great family activity and a wonderful opportunity to educate young children about the importance of protecting our wildlife and environment.
